Architects

Every staircase we produce at Hardwood Design Inc. is inspired by the work of an architect. Once a design is drafted, we do our best to successfully capture the architect’s original vision. Alternatively, we are known for offering architects alternative design concepts that may have been over looked. Our pond side conference room/show room is often the meeting place for architects, their clients and our staff to see the possibilities of the project.

Samples and mock-ups are an essential part of design development. Architects and designers are encouraged to request samples so that their clients can see and feel the elements of their stair and balustrade.

We are known for recreating the most graceful historic rail fittings and profiles. Large sweeping goosenecks and oversized climbing volutes are often seen in our projects. If modern is the proffered style one can see slick steel and glass stair designs in our photo gallery.

We have 30 years of experience making custom stairs and stair parts. Using our skill and experience, we will often refine dimensions to maximize space, production efficiency and to ensure code compliance. However, we rely on the eye of the architect to drive the aesthetic direction and proportions of each flight of stairs we make.

Our stair builders can work with architects during the early design phase of a new project or after the blueprints have already been drawn up. Either way, we guarantee that the structures will be safe, secure and maintain the architect’s artistic intent.

We archive all of our drawing blocks and offer these to architects to increase drawing, design and production efficiency. Also, to streamline the process, we request that architects specify Hardwood Design Inc. components and services on their plans and bid documents.

Interested architects can also request a CD that contains sample CAD drawings, stair gallery pictures and more by emailing info@hdistair.com with their name and address, or by viewing our CAD database on our resources page.

To learn more about our designs and services, or to request samples from the work shop, architects can contact us by phone (401.294.2235) or fax (401.295.1086). As well, all clients can visit the Hardwood Design Inc. headquarters at 24 Dorset Mill Road in Exeter, Rhode Island.

Home Builders

Stairs and railings are often among the most challenging aspects of any home construction project. Consumers are increasingly demanding more elaborate designs and, as a result, home builders may not have the capabilities or the time to execute these designs. At Hardwood Design Inc., we have experience building a wide variety of custom staircases that meet the demands of many residential layouts and construction budgets.

Our mission is to provide our customers with any level of service that is required. While some of our builder customers rely on us to supply CNC machined stair carriages and balustrade parts, others request that we provide dimensioned framing and landing plans for their stair wells during early construction stages. Some go on to contract with Hardwood Design to provide and install the entire stair and rail system. We are not limited to new construction and often provide stair parts from antique lumber to match existing stair and rail components.

Contemporary structures with hybrid stair designs that pose unique challenges are no problem for our expert stair builders. As such, we have developed an impeccable reputation among home builders throughout New England.

Now, more than ever, we are conscious of cost-efficiency and quality when it comes to modern residential construction. We have 30 years of experience building stairs – as of 2003, we embraced the use of CNC machining to guarantee top-tier stair parts for all of our custom projects. Our expertise has made it possible for home builders to complete even the most ambitious projects while staying within budget, making us a regional leader in high-profile and challenging stair construction.

Whether you are looking for a curved staircase for a main entryway, an intricate bending rail or a tightly coiled spiral staircase, we can offer examples of our work that prove our capabilities.

Home builders interested in working with us can contact our offices either by phone (401.294.2235), fax (401.295.1086) or email (info@hdistair.com), or they can visit our Exeter, Rhode Island, headquarters at 24 Dorset Mill Road.

Lumberyard and Millwork Shops

Specialty lumberyards rely on Hardwood Design to provide expertise and to fabricate custom components for their high end residential builders. Ordering custom stair parts can be intimidating and risky for any lumber salesperson. We understand this and work to ensure that we fill your requirements and review your stair part application on every job. We provide templating service as well as consultation to ensure total success and customer satisfaction. Let us compliment your normal stock stair parts inventory with custom stair treads, baluster turnings, box newels and handrail fittings. We are generally able to meet your schedule needs including rush orders.

Architectural millwork shops are our main source of monumental stair projects. While these shops are entirely capable of delivering casework, moldings and trims on time and on budget, they find that subcontracting stair work at a fixed price to Hardwood Design is more reliable and profitable. We work with your engineering department to incorporate our work scope and drawings with your adjoining work. Our project managers work in unison with yours to ensure that our stairs blend seamlessly with your panels and cabinets.

AIA contracts, monthly requisitions, lien releases, shop drawings and submittals are part of our regular routine and we have a full office staff to accomplish this essential part of working on large projects.

Please consider choosing Hardwood Design as a partner in your next project.

Businesses interested in exploring a partnership with Hardwood Design Inc. should contact us either by phone (401.294.2235), fax (401.295.1086), email (info@hdistair.com) or stop by our headquarters at 24 Dorset Mill Road in Exeter, Rhode Island. As well, we are more than willing to provide samples of our work upon request.

Stair Builders & Installers

At Hardwood Design Inc., we have spent 30 years mastering the fine art of stairbuilding by collaborating with lumberyards, architects and our peers in the field. We have a reputation as a regional leader when it comes to the quality of our products and services.

Our best customers and partners are fellow stairbuilders and installers who look to us for materials, guidance and assistance. Because we have unparalleled skill and top-tier technology at our headquarters – including CNC machining – fellow stairbuilders come to us to request special price consideration, project collaboration and unique project components.

Potential collaborators shouldn’t hesitate to ask us technical questions As a company, we have helped develop many of the techniques and stair codes used by stairbuilders across the country today and are delighted to share the tricks of the trade that we have learned over the past quarter-century.

Stairbuilders and installers frequently look to us for technical advice about stair building techniques, tools and materials. Our installer partners see the value and financial reward in using Hardwood Design as the primary source for their stair material packages.

Installers seeking subcontract opportunities should contact us. Don’t hesitate to request rail or component samples to help sell your jobs.

Home Owners

Of all of the specialty trades, stairbuilding is among the most demanding, as it requires extreme attention to detail and expert craftsmanship. Mistakes made during the building process will compromise the long-term quality of the structure and only end up costing the homeowner more money. Let us lead you through the process so that you receive the maximum value for your money. By using our online catalog and gallery you can see some of the design and material options we have to offer. We are featured in www.houzz.com showing over 2000 stair images from which to draw ideas. Local new England customers can visit our show room in Exeter RI.

The stairbuilders at Hardwood Design Inc. have been integral members of the Stair Manufacturers Association (SMA) for many years, helping to create the codes and standards that are used throughout the industry. We have set a benchmark and built a strong reputation by building many of the highest-quality residential staircases in New England. Not only are we considered leaders in the field, but we have also done our best to help educate homeowners and craftsmen with little or no experience building stairs themselves.

On our website, we offer a glossary of terms that can help homeowners familiarize themselves with the language used by stairbuilders during the construction process. This allows homeowners to be more involved in the building of their new staircase and better vocalize what they want out of their new structure.

We offer all services to our customers, from the design and installation of completely new staircases to the rehabilitation of antique or damaged flights. Using our CNC machining, we can even create reproduction stair parts that match your existing pieces exactly.

Collaborating with homeowners throughout the stairbuilding process is something we value at Hardwood Design Inc. A successful working relationship is beneficial to all parties involved and helps ensure that every project goes smoothly.

Homeowners who would like to learn more should contact us by phone (401.294.2235) or fax (401.295.1086). We also offer complimentary flash drives showcasing our previous work. These can be requested by email at info@hdistair.com.
